Activity Steps

1. Introduce the video topic to students by saying: Today we’re going to watch a video where you’ll learn about the trail you can leave behind when you are online. This trail can be big or small, and helpful or hurtful, depending on how you manage it.
2. Show the Follow the Digital Trail video (2:15 minutes). (Note: The video is also available in Spanish, and you can also use the video player to turn on subtitles.) 
3. Lead a class discussion exploring the questions below. 

Distance learning option: Have students watch the video and complete the Pause & Think handout. If there’s time, have students share their responses during a video meeting.

Discussion Questions

• In the video, Feet talked about digital footprints. What is a digital footprint? 

Sample responses:

• A digital footprint is a record of what you do online, including the sites you visit and the things you share about yourself.
• What information does Feet say not to share online? 

Sample responses:

• Never share private information online. 
• What is an example of private information?

Sample responses:

• Private information includes things that can identify you, like your full name, address, telephone number, age or birthday, or school.
• What information does Feet think is OK to share online? 

Sample responses:

• You can share personal information, like your hobbies and favorite things.  
• Be sure that what you share is safe, responsible, and respectful.
• If you’re not sure what to do, ask a trusted adult.
